Government and Economy

In our space settlement, a sufficient form of government and economy is vital to ensure the safety of an organized society. Since our population is going to be small and in an controlled number, only around 2000 people as an average, some forms of government would not be suitable, such as an autocracy. For example, since an autocracy is where one person heads the community, the results could be disastrous if the person of choice turned out to be incompetent and unable to successfully perform his or her duties and responsibilities. It would also be potentially dangerous to use oligarchy, which is where a few people, for the same reasons would rule the community. Therefore, the only conclusion that would be foolproof is to use a form of government that falls into the category of democracy. Democracy is the form of government where all important decisions are made communally and everyone gets an equal say in the matter, or, as Abraham Lincoln summed it up, "a government of the people, by the people, for the people". Using a democracy would not only unite the people and form a bond, but would also result in a more organized, methodical and therefore more self-sufficient society.

There are several forms of government that fall into the category of democracy. For example, there is the direct democracy, where all of the citizens take it upon themselves to vote individually on issues. Then there is an indirect, or a representative democracy, where the separate groups of people or those citizens that differ in their opinions elect a representative for them. It is perhaps safe to say that the best form of democracy to use in the space settlement community of Destino Magnus is indirect democracy. A direct democracy would probably not be wise to use, however, because since each citizen would be acting for himself or herself, our society could possibly follow through with the saying "United we stand, divided we fall." We thought that democracy will give in the citizen’s thoughts, and will give satisfaction to most people.

While government is vital for our settlement with over 20 people, economy will support our systems as well. We will survive on digital money, which we will scan the person’s whole body for authentication. The body will have a micro-chips embedded in them, which keeps track of their body status, which is sent to the central database. The database will communicate with stores to match their status with the day before. The person, and the hospital is also capable of changing their status in an instant if they have turned out to get a serious disease that could change their bodies in minutes, which will not match with previous status, and so updating the database. Their will be many restrictions on changing one’s status, since that could lead to hacking. The person’s micro-chip, along with their DNA is required to change their status. The chips could also be used to see whether someone has died, and what caused their death.

It will be very hard to create a clone of one person, since they will need to have another micro-chip, alter the database, and will need to have the clone in an imperfect position, since us humans are not perfectly born, and some defects will apply, even in everyday life, such as scratches, scabs, bleeding, nutrition, et cetera.

The database will be guarded securely, and will always have 4 backups, which become in sync every 3 hours. Two will be within the station, while the other two will be orbiting our station.
